Is a wireless router the same thing as a wired modem and how can I access the same data with a router if I am away from home?

Solution

A modem and a router are two different things.
A moedm talks to the ISP and serves up one IP address to a device. Generally a router.
A router accepts an IP address from the modem, and serves up many IP addresses to internal devices, either wired or WiFi.
Often, the 'modem' and the 'router' are in the same physical box.

And you can't take your 'router' on the road and have it work. It needs to connect to something upstream (your modem), and then your ISP.
