4K Gaming - Screen Tearing

I got a sweet deal on a 4K FreeSync monitor, AOC U2879VF for $259 after the promo code, still available here. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824160278

I'd probably buy another one if I had the money :D

Been using 1080p 144Hz and now this 4K 60Hz, and the screen tearing is just awful on the 4K. I don't remember it being that bad on 1080p 60Hz. I believe the screen tearing is really taking away form the gaming experience and I'd be better off using the 1080p 144Hz, but I'd really like to enjoy the 4K display.

I'm using a GTX 1070 + 7700K. I know the 1070 isn't enough for 4K, but I think it's the G-Sync/FreeSync that I'm missing the most.

Both my monitors have FreeSync, I'd like to keep both. I'd probably have to sell the GTX 1070 to get RX Vega. Would Vega 64 be the better choice? I'd most likely wait for partner board designs to become available.

Yeah I tried that but didn't like it. The monitor just arrived today. I was playing CoD: WWII Beta yesterday on 1080p 144Hz getting 140-200fps, and then today on 4K 60Hz getting 50-70fps; and though the 4K looked great (when I was standing still/not moving), I turned on V-Sync and it felt like a weight holding my character down so he couldn't move fast, the 1080p 144Hz was a much better experience I must say.

CoD: WWII Beta ran good, around 60fps normal-high settings, FXAA.

BF1 ran terrible, had to turn to all low settings to get 60fps.

PUBG 40fps high settings.

GTAV ran good with very high settings, FXAA 70fps.

How many fps are you getting in 4k in the games you play?

I assume you'd be aware of Vsync as daswilhelm has suggested but i guess you're not using it because of input lag?

If so, Fast sync can help, along with using Nvidia inspector or ingame fps commands if applicable to limit the fps threshold. Another trick is if enabling Vsync/Adaptive/Fast does develop input lag is to cap your fps 1 or 2 fps lower than refresh, has similar effect to triple buffering in opengl games.

Thanks for the answers. I just realized Nvidia Control Panel is missing and I have some sort of driver error. I checked and see a more recent driver is available from Nvidia so I'm downloading now and will install and check out Fast Sync.

@boju do I cap fps using Nvidia Control Panel custom resolution? (what's the best way to cap fps?)

Nvidia CP doesn't have a feature to cap fps but Nvidia Inspector does - https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5077-nvidia-inspector.html

Like Rivetuner its a nifty small program. How it works is you can extract it anywhere then run nvidiaProfileInspector.exe. In the Window it opens look under Sync & Refresh and you'll see Frame Rate Limiter. Click the down arrow in the column to the right that says Off by default. There is a whole range of fps options to choose in the drop menu. Click Apply changes in the upper right corner of the UI.

I played a few games for a while on 4K 60Hz, and then switched back to 1080p 144Hz. I must say hands down 1080p 144Hz is a much better gaming experience especially on first-person shooters. Maybe it could be different if I had a faster GPU for 4K.

*I cannot confirm whether this was true then or not, but today after being utterly disgusted with the input lag of the 4K monitor for simple productivity tasks such as web browsing and word processing, I started going through the settings and realized FreeSync was enabled  I turned it off and now there is nowhere near the amount of input lag. Made a world of difference.
