Hey everyone,

I got a GTX 580 for $10 at a garage sale a few months ago. Needless to say I didn't expect it to work at all, but I figured it might be a fun project just to learn the ins and outs of a card and potentially soldering. Surprisingly the card turns on and windows identifies it and will run with it, but there are more than a few problems (some potentially non-fixable). With all of my computer projects out of the way, I figured now would be a fun time to try and see what I can do with it, I have no expectations.

Here's my notes on what happening and what I've done so far:

  • - Some horizontal red line artifacts appear on screen, but not on black or white backgrounds

    - Only one DVI port gives input: the other doesn't work and I haven't tried the mini-HDMI

    - Windows identifies the card, but the device disables itself regardless of which drivers I use

    - I can't get afterburner or vramtest to identify anything other than that its a EVGA 580 SSC

    - Lines do not appear on screenshots when I've done the screenshot test

    - I've taken apart the card, cleaned the pcb with a safe electronics cleaner and isopropyl

    - Replaced thermal paste and pads

    - Temps are actually very solid for a fermi card, doesn't seem to be an overheating issue

I'm torn between trying to re-flow the GPU chip with a heatgun, or trying to find a way to re-flow the VRAM, either way If anyone can help me determine whether the problem is with the chip or the vram, it would be greatly appreciated!

I tried GPUZ last time I fooled around with it and didn't seem to pull any info from it other than temps and the name. I'll try a re-flow this weekend however and report back.
