New Build CPU makes continuous clicking sounds - what's wrong?

Hi all, long time lurker but first time poster. I've been doing system builds for almost 20 years now and this is the first time something really stumped me, so reaching out to the larger community here for some tips.

Built a new Ryzen build back in April. Specs: Ryzen 7 1700x, Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3 motherboard, M2 SSD, 16GB RAM, GeForce GTX 950, with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo Cooler.

Ever since the build, it sounds like the CPU is making continuous clicking sounds. But as you can see from above, there are no moving parts here except for fans. I took out the Graphics card and the sounds still are happening. Not sure what else I can take out to troubleshoot this.

Here is a few second audio clip I posted to Clyp: https://clyp.it/mf0fht4r?token=89cb51221e7bb3f915eeeea171e36c45

Any thoughts on what the problem could be? Other than the clicking sounds everything is working fine - but the sounds are getting unbearable... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

I swear I've read your post 3 times now so I don't think I missed this unless I'm blind, but did you try running the CPU cooler without the fan? That sounds like something in between a bad bearing, or perhaps the CPU fan isn't properly mounted to the sink and the vibration is causing that rattling against the cooler fins? Did you check if each corner of the fan mount had the little rubber decoupling pads?
Another truck is when you have it powered up, carefully use your finger in the middle of the fans on the plastic hub to stop them from spinning one at a time, or at least slow them, and see if the noise decreases or stops at any point, which may help nail down if that's what's doing it.

Thanks doubletake. I would not have guessed, but I went in and manually stopped the fan and the clicking stopped. I could not visibly see anything wrong with the fins and I believe it's properly mounted...so maybe I'll just pick up a new one or contact Cooler Master. Thanks again!

Glad you found it. Most any 120mm fan that has the same connector should fit that cooler btw, it's just a 120 mm fan. If you want slightly better cooling, your 212 should have come with a bracket for a second fan, so you can get 2 fans and have a push pull setup on the 212 to help airflow.

This guy does a comparison. Not something you have to do, but if you are replacing fans and catch a good deal, why not?
