Would it be better to get a less expensive power supply that just meets my estimated wattage or the other way around?

I've always seen people who's systems run about 400W and yet they have a 600W power supply. I'm new to PC building, but this confuses me, and almost seems like a waste of money in every way imaginable!

Depends on what you are buying, read the article that was posted.

No, it's really not a waste of money, buying a good high quality PSU is NEVER a waste of money.

Buying a 400w PSU for a system drawing 400w doesn't give you any headroom at all. Normally adding 150w to the estimated system draw is good practice. The PSU will run more efficient and last longer in the long run. And there really isn't much of a price difference in quality PSU's, $10 to $20 depending.

So for a 400w system get a good high quality 550w PSU as an example, it will run cooler, quieter and last longer in the long run.

It also leaves room for upgrades in the future that will draw more power so you buy one PSU instead of two.

Say you have $1,200 to $1,500 wrapped up in parts and buy some cheap PSU to save a few bucks and the PSU goes and takes your system with it.

Saving that $30 bucks just cost you $1,200 to $1,500.

We see people spending a lot of money on PC parts here all the time then buy some cheap PSU because they don't really understand how important the PSU really is.

Then they come back and start a thread once they have issues.

We see parts lists all the time, huge amounts of money for parts then some cheap PSU, lucky those types who do post them are doing so for advice so we can recommend something better.
