Hi all.

I have a 2009 PC lying around and would like to upgrade it spending as little as possible. Its main use will be running office programs and web surfing... but also very light gaming.

The motherborad is an Asrock N68-S (AM2+/AM3) and supports most 95w Phenoms II. I've been offered a Phenom II 840 (3.2 Ghz, 2MB L2, NO L3 cache) and a Phenom 945 (3.0 Ghz, 2MB L2, 6MB L3 cache). Is one much better than the other?

I suppose they are almost the same when surfing the net and watching videos, but is one better for gaming? Do 200mhz compensate the lack of 6MB of L3 cache? The main game it's meant to run is World of Warcraft, which is very cpu dependant and keeps most of its load on a single core, though it would be used for doing simple/solo world content and very low end raiding (LFR).

Thanks! Unfortunately they sold both processors before I made my mind haha. They were so cheap :( Guess I'll just throw an Athlon II x2 there and keep it as a web browsing pc!

I would have actually said the Phenom. The 840 was actually a rebadged Athlon II quad core. In the meantime, check it out.

21.95 is hard to argue with for that lol. That's essentially the same chip as that 840 except it is 3.1ghz instead of 3.2. Which 100 mhz would be negligible anyway.

If you prefer the 840, here's one for 29. Watch out though, there are some 840t models floating around on there, not sure on those, but they say 2.9ghz instead of 3.2. So you would need to check your manual.

Do some looking around though. Those chips are all over ebay for dirt cheap.

If you prefer the Phenom ii 945 then here you go. 28.95.

Looked at your board, and it looks like you can go with the 945 with bios updates. It looks like it will take a couple of the Phenom 2 6 core chips, but you'd be limited to like 2.8 ghz. However, especially with the 945. you should be able to drop in like an RX 560 or gtx 1050ti and have a decent budget gaming box.
