I recently saw an article about using a old laptop as a NAS. So i thought i will also give it a try.

I have a old Acer Aspire 5740g, with Core i5-430m and 4GB ram. Also has a graphics card ati 5650HD. Detailed specs are here: External Link

I do not need raid, it will mostly serve as file sharing and media server to stream movies to TV and other devices.

Now the problem is i already have external HDDs 3 x 4TBs (USB 3).

The laptop does has a 10/100/1000 LAN, but has USB2 and Sata II (3 Gbps). What is the best way to use my usb 3 external HDD in such a way that it gives best output.

So far i have thought about using msata port (take out wifi card) and use port multiplier to connect the drives using sata to usb 3 converter. not sure though !!!

I am open to suggestions.

thanks in advance

You're not getting any replies because this is just too much of a hack job to deserve any professional advice.

Stop being cheap and just buy a NAS. You can get a diskless one, such as a Synology, and use your existing hard drives in that. A used one probably won't even cost that much and you'll get 10x the performance and 100x the features that a homebrew NAS will give you.
