I had this headset for like a year now, and just recently I started having problems with it.

My microphone stopped working, however the sound still works, e.g. going on youtube and listening to music would be completely fine.

As a result, I bought a new temporary headset in order to test it. It appears to be that the microphone still doesn't work, but the sound does. Don't really know what's up with it and I would like some help if possible.

Here are two pictures that might be able to help you in order to understand what the problem might be:

Also, just for the record - the headset only has one cord and I did try to put it within multiple plugs including at the back too.

Solution
Would not, and I do not, put much faith in Windows determining the "best" driver. May be true from Microsoft's perspective but not so much from the device's or end-user's perspective.

Could not, of course, scroll down through the troubleshooter windows - appears that there may be some unresolved/unfixed issues.

And you are using the built-in audio ports on your motherboard - is that correct? Versus some PCIx slot audio card.

Not sure that you have the Microphone properties set correctly per image #2 ("wdWa4mr.png) above.

Also not so sure about the Exclusive mode settings via the last image (xCG8QuM.png).

Doubt that your intent is to use a portable music player via the microphone jack.

Dudio's suggestion is viable. However...

Did you try the year old headset on another computer or device to check the microphone?

See if the problem follows the old headset.

Try plugging in some other, known working microphone - even a standalone mic to see if you can get the microphone to appear in Recording devices.

Download and reinstall the sound card drivers via the applicable sound card manufacturer's website.

Could be an issue with the microphone port.

I have used the headset on a different device and it appears to be working. Meaning there must be something wrong with my computer/settings?

Correct.

Hopefully it may just be a matter of downloading, reinstalling and reconfiguring the applicable audio card drivers via the audio card's manufacturer.

But first try the built in Windows troubleshooter via "WIN" + "I" > Update & security > Troubleshoot.

The troubleshooters may find and fix something.

I updated it, nothing changed regarding sound settings except for the fact that it changed "headphones" to "speakers". However, I do have this program named "Realtek HD audio manager" to use now, but it appears to be sort of useless.

edit:

It appears to be that my sound won't even work anymore now.

Use Device Manager to identify the audio/sound card in place and download the drivers directly from the manufacturer if possible.

Once the new drivers are loaded you will need to go in to select and configure the default Playback device and Recording device.

There are likely to be a number of "Properties" to be configured via the various Window tabs.

But first do drill down through the existing "Recording device" settings to ensure that you did not miss something or misconfigure a setting.

Try the troubleshooters again and do not forget to work through "WIN" + I" > Devices > Sound settings.

Dudio's suggestion is viable. However I understood that the headset and microphone originally did work via a single 4-pole plug.

The suggested adapter would be used for audio connections where there is only one plug for audio (mono or stereo) and a second, separate connection for the microphone.

Google TS, TRS, TRRS (Tip, Sleeve, Ring) for more details and specifics.

Good news is that the headset worked on another device. Does narrow down the possibilities....

Try to very methodically work through the Playback device and Recording device windows.

The process can be easier if you right click the small speaker icon usually located in the lower right screen corner.
