Replacing Motherboard and CPU, suggestions?

Im replacing my motherboard and CPU soon, to ones more powerful for gaming etc, but as this would be my first time replacing them myself (without buying a complete tower) I don't know myself which is better for my set up in terms of if my hardware will support what i buy.

Im looking to spend up to £500 on both, that pricing coming from a prebuilt set that I found on Amazon (being my prime choice currently).

This would be replacing:
APU A10-7850K Quad-Core CPU
Asus A85XM-A Motherboard

This would be to go along with:
650W Evga 80+ Gold cert PSU
AMD RX480 GPU

Im unsure whether it would be easier and cheaper to get a prebuilt or to get separate parts and put together myself, and also looking for suggestions of better parts I could be getting, and any other useful information for replacing them both. As said before this would be for gaming mostly and general web browsing :)

Agree with SkyNetRising... a 7700K with a Z270 mobo should be perfect for a good upgrade especially with Gaming in mind. Again as stated, the i-7 8700K should be launching in a few days and could be at the £350 ish rate, which just might suit better for the long run but a good motherboard will cost around £200, so not too far of your budget...Opps forgot the ram on bothe optiions the cheapest DDR4 2 x 8 for 16GB @ 2666Mhz will set you back about £140...

Applying Thermal paste for the first time sounds daunghting but it is fairly straightforward...Also you would have built your own system!

Just noticed this good deal at Overclockers for a Asus Strix Z270 Mobo and i7-7700K for £440...

My main concern with buying them separately is me having to thermal paste the cpu etc myself. I have never done it before and would be worried in screwing it up especially since the cpu is expensive. Also would they be the best choices for my price range?

Watch some videos, how to apply thermal paste. There are plenty on youtube.
Usually cpu coolers have thermal paste pre-applied already.

BTW i7-6700k doesn't come with cpu cooler included. You have to buy it separately.

For your price range I'd probably go with i7-7700k + Z270 board or maybe Ryzen 7 system.
Also you may want to wait a few days until Intel Cofee Lake cpus become available. That probably would be even better choice.
