Shappire R9 280x has usage drops, therefore, FPS drops.

Hello, I have a problem since a good amount of time and I need help.

I start playing fine, I usually get 60fps easily. But suddendly, I get FPS drops, going down to 15-20 fps, for 10 seconds or so usually, and then back to 60fps. It happens with almost all videogames. Sometimes it happens every once in a while, other times happens every 1 or 2 minutes and it becomes a pain to keep playing. It's very annoying.

I have tried with different AMD drivers (they are up to date right now), deactived things like Cool n' Quiet from the BIOS for in case it was a CPU problem, I reinstalled Windows 10 twice, monitored GPU and CPU temperature and they're always fine, etc... so I don't know what else to do.

I'm currently playing Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, I monitored this time with AMD Overdrive and you can see here the usage drops: https://imgur.com/a/Kat1X (the big drops at the end are because I closed the game)

I'll thank any help I can get.

My PC specs:

-Sapphire R9 280X Tri-X OC 3GB GDDR5.
-AMD FX-8350 CPU.
-G.Skill 2x4GB RAM.
-ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 Motherbase.
-Nox Hummer 850W 80 Plus Bronze Modular.
-Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB with Windows 10 Pro 64 Bits.
-Seagate Barracuda SATAIII 1TB.

that mobo really should not be running 125w cpu's

you can test if it is poor VRM's by opening the pc case and putting a fan right on them

if you dont get drops then you know its the mobo

the power supply rings all kinds of red flags as well

monitor cpu temps while you play also

Ty for answering. I just played 20 minutes of NieR: Automata with Afterburner running, and I saw a clear pattern. It seems like when everytime the CPU gets to 61-62ºC, the CPU goes quickly down to 44-45ºC, and that's the moment where the GPU usage gets its drops, so does the FPS too. After a moment of being in 44-45ºC, the CPU goes back to 57-58ºC, till it gets a peak of 61-62ºC again and it happens.

You can see it in this image of Afterburner. https://imgur.com/a/g43r4

By the way, what's wrong with the power supply? Thanks again.

thermal throttling, the cpu is getting too hot

never heard of that company, psu's tend to be pretty crappy when they come from unknown makers

This is a clear cut case of over heating the CPU. Please check the links below. As per AMD, max temp for this CPU is 61 degrees C. Like the above poster says, what is happening is that your CPU reaches its max temp, and then throttles down, which reduces the performance. You will need to re seat the cooler on the CPU. Please unscrew your cooler, remove the TIM from the CPU using isopropyl alcohol >90% strength, and then re apply new TIM. Re seat the cooler and you will be done. Hopefully, this should resolve your issues.

And yes, I will second what maxalge said. You really need to change your PSU to a better one. I am pasting a link to tier list of PSUs and would not recommend anything less than tier 2 for gaming.

Ty for answering. Sorry I haven't posted in a while, precisely my PSU stopped working (very weird the way it happened) but anyway, I had to change it so I've been a week without the PC. It's back and I changed to thermal paste too, and well, it keeps happening. Now it doesn't even get to 61ºC, just with 57ºC or so it already get those huge drops. I post another Afterburner picture I just took testing with NieR: Automata: https://imgur.com/a/5E3wn

Even the store guys who changed my PSU for a new one couldn't fix this problem, so I don't know what do to anymore at this point.
