Running 2 Sapphire 5800 series in xfire.
Looking at upgrading to MSI GeForce GTX 1080 DirectX 12 GTX 1080.

Worth it? Time to upgrade?

Solution
Actually, at 4k the bottleneck is not on the CPU as it moves to the GPU at higher resolutions. Now with your current i7, you wont get as good of fps as you would with a 7700k, but at 4k, the difference is much smaller than it is at 1080p.

In my opinion, for a gaming rig you always want to put your money in a GPU. If you drop a 1080 in your system, you will get better fps than you would if you keep your 5800's and upgraded to a 7700k. And upgrading to just a 1080 would be cheaper than a new CPU/mobo/RAM. So for me, I would go with the 1080 and plan on upgrading your CPU/mobo/RAM sometime in 2018.

Still running an older i7 980x OC to 4ghz on a Rampage formula III mb. Would like to maximize my monitors which are 4k. Upgrading the system one component at a time, thought this would be the best place to start.

ouch the 1st gen i7? the bottleneck is gonna be pretty harsh, especially on 4k

if u want the best 4k experience, u should opt for a GTX 1080 Ti instead :)

if u pair the GTX 1080 / 1080ti with the i7, it's gonna be an outright CPU bottleneck
but the vast gaming experience improvement would still be very, very nice :)

as u seem to already know that u need a whole new rig, i don't see the reason for stopping you :) i hope u'll enjoy the new GPU

it might, on the CPU dependant games, but in most gaming case, i'll agree with you :)

but this CPU is even lower than the i7 4790k in case of single core speed, the bottleneck should be viewable, although it's minor
