I own an older 2.0 external disc reader/burner in the early 2000's and the device only has a single usb port for power and connector. I was browsing through some 3.0 external models a few days ago. I noticed the photo shows 2 ports behind the device and it looked like a DC power port and a usb port. My question is, does all these new device comes with 2 ports now? I thought if that's the case, it isn't convenient. I like to have one single cable. Any suggestions?

Solution
It may not be convenient but it's safer.

With power coming from another source, there's less risk of power interruption, thus making 2 port USB 3.0 external ODDs safer to operate.

Also, USB 1.0 and 2.0 can deliver up to 0.5A while USB 3.0 can deliver up to 0.9A. If the external ODD needs more than 0.9A to operate, it needs separate source for power.
