Hey, I recently picked up an NZXT Aer RGB PWM fan and it's been fine so far, but today I booted up my system it did the usually fan high spin up like it normally does which then slows down to normal again, but this time the fan turned off completely. I booted up and checked in HWMonitor and it wasn't be detected at all. I turned it off and on a few times, same problem even in the bios.
So I unplugged it and plugged in a non PWM fan into the same header as I was a bit nervous that something had happened to my fan header, but that worked fine, so I unplugged that and plugged the NZXT fan back in and that worked fine again.

It's still spinning no problem now even after a reboot and turning off completely and back on.

Any idea what might have caused this problem?

It may have simply been slightly loose, and wasn't making full contact.
Could've been slightly raised overall, more pronounced on one side, with the 4th pin barely making contact. Would've been enough to run as if a 3pin fan (100%, no control), but also loose enough that it would only be detected intermittently.

Hard to know for sure.

Well I unplugged it first and plugged it back in and still got the same result. It was only after I swapped the 4 pin for a 3 pin then back again that it started working. Could simply have been a BIOS glitch I suppose.

I suppose it might also be a dying CMOS battery, as I've had some other problems here and there like one of my USB headers not functioning for my HUE+ until I plugged into another header then back into the previous one.

I had the same problem again this morning, but this time unplugging and plugging back in seemed to fix the problem. After a second inspection of the bios, it picked the fan up in the bios when it wasn't spinning, but HWMonitor didn't see it. The only thing that changed since I installed the fan was a Windows 10 update. But I don't see how that could effect it.

Apparently I fixed it and I don't know how. I just went into the bios to look over and then accidentally did save and exit without changing anything instead of exit without saving. And now it works????? lol
