Hi,

currently i build a new ryzen pc using d-link dwa 171 which is 2.0 compatible but i put at 3.0 usb.. when i did a speedtest on both my pc and android phone. my pc only got 1.5mbps average while my android phone got 9mbps. both at same distance.

Do i need a 3.0 wifi adaptee in order to speed up my internet speed ?

thanks

As mentioned the USB2 is not the limiting factor. It is highly unlikely any USB adapter will get over 100mbps which is still well within USB2 speeds. This is mostly because nobody is going to build a USB adapter with 4 antennas so it can never run the higher rate encoding.

I suspect your problem is the adapter. It is built to be small and conserve power. This helps when your primary concern is portability but both will decrease the wifi performance.

These really small device are almost stupid to buy. They have tiny antenna and if you put these in a desktop you are almost placing your antenna inside a metal box.

Try a 15ft USB cable and see if moving it away from the computer helps.

1.5 Mbps is well below the data transfer limit of USB 2.0, so that's not what's limiting your speed. A different wireless adaptor may speed up your connection, but only because the wireless adaptor itself may be better.

If you want to improve wireless performance, you're better off getting an actual PCIe wireless adaptor add-in card.
