I have an MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition Mobo and can't figure this out.

I have already:
checked cables (monitor recognizes it has an HDMI cable)
tried multiple HDMI cables
uninstalled and reinstalled GPU, CPU, RAM and mobo battery
turned on computer with only HDMI cord and power cord in (but all hardware)

I can't figure out if I need to or even can clear CMOS

I have not tried using my laptop as a monitor (don't know if that would make a difference)

question:
i know not to use a lot of thermal paste when installing a CPU, but is it possible that this might be from using too much?

i doubt this is useful information, but:
my case is an NZXT Phantom 530 White (full tower)
my monitor is a BenQ GL2460HM (LED)

any suggestions or insight is appreciated! thank you for reading!
