Hi ,
Currently saving money to buy a new CPU (Intel i5 4460) and was wondering after i have physically gone into taking my old CPU out and replacing it what would be the next step?

Do i have to go into the bios or will my PC run as usual?

- gtx 960 2gb
- intel i3 4170 (current)
-8gb DDR3
- 2TB

Many thanks :D

Solution
First, BEFORE swap check if your motherboard needs BIOS update to run new CPU.
After the swap, on first run, the BIOS should notice the new CPU and enter BIOS automatically. Then after checking that the CPU is recognized correctly, do Save and Exit, go to Windows and let it make any driver updates, and that should be all.

That's an odd upgrade. Is the aim better gaining performance? While the 4460 is a quad core it only clocks at 3.2Ghz with boost of 3.4Ghz, the 4170 runs at 3.7Ghz. Because both CPU's are the same Haswell architecture in games and apps that only use 1 or 2 cores your 4170 should actually be faster. Both cpu have 4 threads due to the 4170's hyperthreading so your going from 2 stronger core with hyperthreading to 4 weaker cores. Doesn't seem worth it unless you know your games/apps will definitely benefit from 4 physical cores.

@sizzling so what you are suggesting is that its not worth the upgrade?

Could you suggest a better upgrade for my build that would be roughly around/under £200

Many Thanks
