Current hardware:

5820K
ASUS x99 Strix Gaming
16GB Dominator RAM
1080 FE

5820K is going on almost 3 years old, and have been looking to upgrade for a month or so now. I was considering getting the 8700k, I just am not sure the upgrade is worth it when I could spend on other things. I also have an ASUS PG279Q, and a 60hz Benq I forgot the model, doesn't even matter. Lol.

I was considering an ASUS PG348Q. Maybe a 1080ti. Also the 8700k or a Ryzen setup was also in play.

I have about $1200 in Amazon gift cards and that's what I was looking to upgrade something with. Help me spend my money, well technically it was other peoples money.. But you get the point. Lol. =)

1. Upgrade to Coffee lake will need to throw away your MB, new Z370 MB may be more expensive. Your RAM may not be compatible with new MB.
2. With your 2k monitor, 1080 ti is overkill. Do you have any bottleneck, dislike FPS? If not, no need to upgrade.
3. If you just want to spend $1200 to get the best. Coffee lake I7-8700k for $376, new Z370 MB for ~$200, hopefully no new RAM is needed. new 4k monitor for ~300, 1080ti for ~$700 and sell your 1080 for ~$450. This is a reasonable upgrade if you prefer best Intel :) Ryzen build with Ryzen 1700 will be cheaper build with extra 2 cores

I'll be honest, I've been using Intel since the early 90's. I've never even considered an AMD build, until now.

With that said, to me, you're essentially telling me the monitor isn't worth it, and I am inclined to agree. I love the one I have.

I was seriously considering an 1800x, with 3600 CL16 and adding an 960 pro m.2 to the build. But, the machine is primarily used for gaming, in 1440p. So I do feel it is a very relevant build. However, how much better is the 8700k at that point?

I am not saying your monitor is worth nothing, it is a good monitor with 2k resolution. 1080ti and 1080 will have very tiny diff with that monitor :) Since you are getting 1080ti, 4k monitor makes more sense. Coffee lake is 30% better in benchmark. Will be more in video editing/streaming and well optimized AAA games :) 1700 can be easily overclocked to 1800X, but if you want to spend that extra, go for it :)
