Hey i currently have an i7 2600 (non k) cpu on a Z68 Motherboard and was curious as to weather spending about £165 would be worth it to upgrade to a i7 3770k because of the newer generation and ability to overclock, im using a Cooler Master TX3 with dual fans currently but thinking if i pick up this new cpu i would probably buy a 240mm aio, so if i overclock the i7 3770k will it be worth it from the 2600 (non k) , i do many tasks such as gaming, rendering videos, editing and browsing web, would i notice a pretty decent bump in performance?

Also to do the upgrade should i just download gigabytes bios for this board that supports 3rd gen and simply install the new cpu? or is there anything else i'd have to do?

Solution
It will be decent upgrade but not much.
What GPU do you have? Check CPU/GPU usage during gaming, if CPU is not bottlenecking you (not close to 100%), little value in upgrading.

For upgrade, yes, make sure you have the latest BIOS before install new cpu

Currently a GTX 970 GPU is always at 99-100% but i am also thinking about getting a gpu upgrade sometime soon

1060 6gb/1070 will be good upgrade

I think the GPU would get you more than the overclock of a different cpu, a locked I7 is still a nice cpu, and you may not know, but look into the turbo bin overclocking for the 2nd and 3rd gen locked cpu.

Can add 4 to each state of 4 core 3 core 2 core and single core max clocks. 35 becomes 39 for 4 core, 36 to 40 for 3 core, 37 to 41 for 2 core, and a single core goes from 3.8 GHz to 4.2GHz

Don't overclock the FSB, it can lead to data corruption, 103 should be ok, 105 iffy, but 107 is where it begins, even though 4.5GHz is nice to see.

If I were you, I would not upgrade to a 3770K. You still have 8 threads, and you just gain clockspeed. Also, in order to overclock this chip which is not soldered but has that toothpaste under the IHS with quite bad thermals you need an expensive AIO.
If you are doing a lot of multitasking I would suggest you go for a Ryzen 1600 or 1700 and OC to 3.7 on the stock cooler. I know you need a new mobo and RAM, which is a pain, but the 3770k won't be a very valuable upgrade for rendering video. Also, bear in mind that Ryzen beats Broadwell-E in IPC, let alone the i7 3770k. With the 1600 you have the same or a bit more single clock power with those 4 extra threads.
If you are not willing to go for that option or you don't want to spend as much (although it is not that much more expensive), I would personally wait. Just some clockspeed does not justify getting another CPU and high-end cooler.

Hmm how about if i get a nice GPU upgrade and potentially an SSD to go with it and just hold out on my current cpu?

Best bang for the buck option, and don't forget the 400 MHz limited overclock. 2nd gen is a real soldier.

That sounds like a much better way of spending your cash. Next time you upgrade your CPU make sure you get some more cores as well. The clockspeed would give you some benefits for sure, but it is a very short term upgrade and soon you will be bottlenecked again.

Get the GPU if you need it (GTX 1070 at minimum, 1060 6GB isn't that much faster at all) and SSD now and save up for Ice Lake or Pinnacle Ridge would be my advice. Adding an SSD is the biggest single improvement you can make for a system in my opinion

GTX 1060 6gb a good upgrade from a GTX 970? Am I missing out on some godly driver for Pascal? Last time I heard the 1060 was only ~10% faster.
