MSI Gaming X cooler running at higher RPM than before! (RX 480 8GB)

Hello people.

I have my MSI RX 480 Gaming X 8G since September 2016. I ran into an issue like 4 or 5 months after the purchase and I still haven't fixed it till this day.

Basically the MSI Gaming X cooler used to work at around 1600 RPM max (default). Now if I play any game and play for about 7 minutes it will jump to 2400-2500 RPM and it's very loud and unnecessary.

I thought maybe it's overheating but it's ~70°C all the time. I made a custom fan profile in MSI Afterburner similar to the old one where it's 1600 RPM around 65-70 degrees. Same temperature. I cannot understand this.

Now I can't use it without the MSI Afterburner as it's very loud without it. Why the sudden change in fan speeds? What could have caused that? I've been using DDU since forever and always installing new drivers. I also have updated the VGA BIOS before. Nothing seems to work.

Please help me out, this is a bit tricky. Is there a way to restore the VGA BIOS to factory default or something? Any possible solution other than using the MSI Afterburner?

Best regards.

Check your AMD Radeon Global Settings. If you have chill, frame pacing, or anything like that enabled, you could be messing with your fan settings.

If that's not the case, just keep running your fan profile. Maybe if you apply overclock at startup, it will keep the profile running without MSI Afterburner being open -- mine does.

I contacted the MSI support and they said to test another card in case the PCI-E slot is defective. I will try that but I doubt it's true.

I don't have anything enabled, I used DDU and reinstalled the drivers and all the settings are default. When the problem first happened months ago I reverted back to the old drivers where it was fine but it kept jumping to 2400 RPM which tells me it's not the drivers.

I also removed all the settings and uninstalled all software such as the MSI Afterburner and MSI Gaming App. Still same problem.

Also, the "Apply at startup" option in MSI Afterburner was grayed out and I couldn't find a way to fix it.

Do you have another PCI-E slot on your board to test it out? I seriously doubt that could be the problem, but ....

I assume you're trying to keep your system quiet, that's why the fan noise is a concern. Other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do besides a full reinstall of windows, but that's a real pain. Maybe it's a bad card chip, but if MSI's not budging, that may be difficult to determine.

Yeah, it's a bit loud at 2400 RPM.

I have a 2nd PC with the same exact card but the 4G version. I put it in my system (same slot as my bugged card) and the fan profile was working as intended at around 1600 RPM.
I put my 8G card in the 2nd PC and again fan spikes to 2400 RPM after a minute or 2 in gameplay (same game). This clearly tells me it's the card itself.

I greatly appreciate your time and help! Best regards.
