Performance based, am I better off splitting the monitors between the 2 cards as stated above, or run all of them off of the 970?

Solution

Try different setups and see what performance you see. There are often lowered performance when gaming with a multi monitor setup even when the game itself only runs on one.
Not sure what you mean by the performance, the two cards will not work together in SLI so the performance of the cards is separate. Since you have 4 screens you may need to use the two cards depending on the connections you are using and the cards have. If you mean just general use, having 4 monitors off a single card is fine

What I mean is will running my gaming monitor off the 970 by itself be be more beneficial than having all 4 monitors on the 970?
