I've got an GeForce 7050M-M board with a Phenom 9750. I've read around and this supports a lot of AM3 CPUs. Apparently the Phenom II Bxx CPUs for AM2/+ are the best that this board will take, but AM3 is a little different and people have a different experience.

Does anyone have any experience with this board?

No, Dell actually uses substantial boards in their builds. They have to. Not necessarily high-end, but good quality. I have/had several. Usually under-rated in capacity. I would put one of Dell's boards up against any comparable ECS board any day.

Here is the CPU support list for that board if it is version2.
While it has a AM2+ socket, ECS doesn't seem to spec out any Phenom II or Athlon II CPUs for it. That could be simply because they haven't kept up their old webpage, or it could be because they don't have a BIOS update to support that gen CPU.
And from the looks of their BIOS download page, it doesn't look like they bothered to provide any BIOS updates since 2009. And only a measly 2 update at that.
Here is a 3rd party site that seems to agree. I would not take a chance unless the cost for the old CPUs are low enough that you can absorb the loss w/o an issue. Or unless someone jumps in with a validation.
The CPU you have in there now looks to be the fastest of any they spec out.

Just out of curiosity, what is the gfx card you are using now? And what is the make/model of your PSU?

Unless I'm reading the date formats wrong, the latest BIOS update was 2012 for ver. 2 which is what I have.

According to https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/amd-processor-model-unknown.91527/

it does support a few AM3 CPUs, like the X3 710.

Yeah the Phenom 9750 is the fastest I got for it, long time ago

Since that was an Asian (TW) website, I read the date as it is commonly written in Asian format; Y/M/D.
Either way, neither update indicates any changes to processors.
It may indeed recognize 2nd gen Phenom/Athlon CPUs since they are quite similar to their 1st gen cousins. If the board were mine, I'd go for it. But I don't know how much you're willing to invest in taking a chance. The poster in the other forum would be a sign that your chances are quite good.

What's a good AM2+/3 CPU?

I don't use AMD (I'm an Intel/nVidia person, hence my sig) and the latest AMD product I have is an OEM HP AM3/DDR3 motherboard from a microtower. I'd use that but the board is in BTX form factor which is quite retarded. Not looking for some extremely high ends but $50 used on Amazon should do the trick.

The best score AM2+ has on Passmark is 5000, I'm looking for something 6000+. The FX 6300 hits that mark but I've heard it's a bad CPU.

Cause that's FM2+/FM3, right?

Do you have any AM3 recommendations?

That's probably because most people went through the trouble of unlocking the extra cores.

The 970 goes for $65 on eBay
https://www.ebay.com/p/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-970-Black-Edition-3-5GHz-Quad-Core-HDZ970FBK4DGM-Processor/96926218

I'm probably gonna snatch some high-density memory (usually labelled "AMD only") because this board only has two DIMM slots, so that'll give it 8GB of RAM, plus the Phenom. It's amazing what AMD used to do, put a 1060 in there and you can play most games without a problem on a socket from the mid 2000s.

That's the lowest price I've seen for the PhII X4 970. And I've bought from that seller, so he's reliable. But I'd be careful putting that 970 in your board. It is a 125W processor and I'm pretty sure your board is only safe up to 95W CPUs.
From the ECS website: "Note: This board supports CPU up to 95W TDP only;"
You'd be taking a chance on a double whammy; that the board even recognizes the CPU and that it can handle it.

I haven't got an aftermarket PSU yet, and I'm not gonna toss a perfectly good board. I'm probably gonna build this thing and sell it off.

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T may work if I can find a good price, it's AM3 and it's a Phenom II. If I can find a super cheap Phenom II to test or if someone local's got one, I will be able to confirm

Even then, bios-mods.com may be able to help, DeathBringer has helped with adding Xeon support to many Dell boards I've had and even added Socket 478 codes to old BIOSes for older rigs.

Safe schmafe.

I ran a 120W Xeon in a board designed for 95W C2Q's. At full load. For 6 months. At 90C. It broke because I dropped the CPU on the LGA and bent the pins and couldn't fix it.

Well, when I get the CPU to test, we'll see.
