Hello,

I'm planning to upgrade my old system from 8 to 16 GB, I currently have 2x4 GB corsair (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B) on my Asus M5A88-M but I'm not sure if the memory will work because some told me my chipset is low density and the memories are high density.

The memories I'm planning to buy are the Kingston HyperX savage DDR3 1866 MHz 2x8 GB

Also, there is the fact that my mobo has 4 slots for a maximum of 16 GB and I'm not sure if I have to fit them all (like 4x4 GB) or could I do 2x8 GB.

On a side note, even if it's listed as a maximum of 16, can I reach 32 GB?

Thanks.

The high density 2X8GB will probably work but they won't work with your 2X4Gb low density at the same time. You can't mix different density modules. You could do 4X4GB low density but you may have problems finding them now.

If the mobo is limited to 16GB that's likely the maximum address space it will handle on the electrical traces between the CPU and DRAM sockets.

Check the ASUS QVL for the 2X8GB modules you want to use.

EDIT: I looked at the specs on the ASUS web site but it wasn't clear to me whether the 16GB max applied to the total memory or each module. If it's each module then the total would be 64GB in 4 slots. You might check out their FAQ.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

My intention was not to mix the memories (unless the mobo can read more than 16 GB which is probably unlikely) along with the fact that its not recommended to do it, however I'm more concerned about the compatibility of motherboard with those particular sticks which are the one that are selling this days and I see no reason for them to not work, however I've read the QVL but unfortunately they do not mention anything about them nor mention anything about low or high density.
