i7 7700k vs ryzen 1800x?

The 1800X and 8700K are both poor value compared to cheaper chips in their respective families - the Ryzen 7 1700 is cheaper than the 1800X yet is basically the same when overclocked (except it might OC 0.1 GHz less on average), while the 8600K is $100 cheaper than the 8700K, and just as fast in games once overclocked.

To me, the best value for a gaming system is either a Ryzen 5 1600 if your budget for CPU+motherboard is around $250, or a Core i5-8600K if you can afford it.

A R7 1700 is $100 cheaper than a 8700k on Newegg.ca. And can be OC'd on a Hyper 212 cooler easily.
On a $120 B350 mobo.
8700k needs not just an AIO, but a high end one to OC. On a $200 plus z370 board.
And runs very hot even on a 280 mm hi end AIO when OC'd aggressively.
Meaning, for me at least, if I was making this decision, the platform cost difference is $260 ish CDN.
And you can actually buy a 1700. Which is on a platform that will be supported for several years.
If you wanted to go from an 8700k to the not yet released consumer 8 core, that will need a Z390 board.

8700k is a very good cpu, "better" than the R7 series. But a better deal it is definitely not.
I would be taking very careful look at all the factors if faced with this purchasing choice.
Since the 8700k is highly likely to be overpriced and/or sold out for the next few months, don't be in a hurry here.

Your Mileage May Vary :)

I'd wait a bit on the 1600 to see if AMD will do a price shuffle response to Coffee Lake - and the 1700 too for that matter. Maybe the 1700 will pass the 1600 on bucks-per-core.

Yeah. Though I think the 1600 has already dropped a little? It's going for under $200.

Quite possible, I haven't checked prices in a while. I'd still expect them to shift some more over the next few weeks as the market finds its new balance points.
