Can I use OC Memory with locked processor on a Z370 MB?

Hello all,

I have the following scenario in mind for casual use and some light productivity (not interested in games):
Motherboard: Asus Prime Z370-A
CPU: Intel i7-8700 (non-K locked version, I am not interested in OC)
RAM: 32GB.

Intel claims memory support for Coffee Lake up to 2666MHz.
Using this build, and since I will use a locked CPU, am I obliged to use 2666MHz ram or I can I put faster ram, let's say 3200MHz? The memory controller which will be OCed is in the CPU or is in the chipset? Even if I can, is the performance increase significant?

Thank you all,
Nikos

I'm not 100% certain but I think if you put in RAM that can go higher, it will still use the default normal speed, and you have to go into your bios to set it higher if you want to. So it should work fine either way
