Hello folks,

I'm quite torn on going with either a Ryzen 5 1600 (and OC to 3.8 GHz) or one of the new Core i5 8600K CPUs. I currently have an i5 2500k OC'd to 4.4 GHz., which is getting out of date.

I am aware of the significant cost difference and the performance lead of the 8600k (at 1080p). But, it seems to me from initial reviews that at 1440p, the gap in performance narrows a lot. The AMD bonus is socket compatibility for future architectures as well.

I use AutoCAD at times and game a lot (FPS, Action, and RPG primarily).

Overall, I'm leaning towards Ryzen but does anyone have some insight on this? Thanks!

G sync just compensates frame rate fluctuations and syncs the monitor's refresh rate to the output of your system.

If you're very sensitive to frame drops and smoothness is the most important thing G-Sync does make a difference. But it's not elevating your computer's performance. 80fps will still be just 80fps and not 144.

Generally for 120/144Hz I would recommend an Intel system. You usually need the stronger IPC to achieve frame rates of 120 and above

However since you're on a 1070 which doesn't pull over 100fps @1440p at max settings and your from the sounds limited budget (at least: no sufficient for an i7) Ryzen seems like a solid choice there as well. You may not use the full potential of your screen though with demanding titles.

Yes, I am a bit reluctant to splurge on and i5 8600k with the required motherboard (definitely not an 8700k). I'm wondering if I am somewhat at an advantage where my monitor is g-sync?
