Hi everyone,

I've been gaming since about 2011 and have played games like DoTA II and Skyrim. I've been able to get by on lower graphic settings, and still can with these games. I recently purchased The Witcher 3 and even on the lowest settings, my machine is chugging. I was wondering if anyone had input on what to upgrade on a standard cheap gaming build. I have listed my spec's below (Processor, GPU, etc)

Approximate Purchase Date: Before the end of October 2017

Budget Range: ~ $500 +/-, I'm willing to bend a little

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, watching videos

Are you buying a monitor: No (I have an Asus LCD monitor that was made in 2010. Still works well, but will likely upgrade someday to something nicer. Any input on this would be appreciated as well, given a $500 budget)

Parts to Upgrade: Currently I have: GPU = AMD Radeon HD 5570. MOBO = ASUS M4N68T-M-V2. PSU = ? Unsure, will have to open case and look, but it fairly new (got from a friend who bought it for his better machine - ended up not fitting in his case)

Do you need to buy OS: No - Running Windows 10

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: None - Originally bought desktop from NewEgg back in 2011.

Location: West Hartford, CT, United States (I'll likely buy from an online source)

Parts Preferences: No preference, just as long as it is compatible

Overclocking: Currently I don't OC.

SLI or Crossfire: I honestly have no idea

Your Monitor Resolution: 920x1080

Additional Comments: Just want to make sure everything is compatable and upgrades will lett me play games on High graphics settings (Ultra settings if within budget)

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Having trouble running The Witcher 3, and would like to play other games such as Skyrim on high graphics settings.

Thanks, again any input would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you need any other information.

Solution
You can get a decent system that is a lot faster than yours for about $600. That would be for medium settings at 1080 with a Ryzen 1300X CPU, Radeon RX 560 and 8 GB of RAM. Only thing that does not include is the Windows license.
At a $500 budget, I would recommend something GTX 1080 level. I would wait at LEAST until the end of October though, because a lot of rumors are circulating that Nvidia will release a 1070 Ti soon. Some are also speculating it will have near 1080 performance. Given what the current prices of the 1070 and 1080 are, I would be willing to bet it will also cause some price changes (for the better).

So I'd say right now your best option is to wait a few weeks, or better yet, wait for holiday pricing as well.

So based on what I already have, you're suggesting I get a new Mobo, Processor, and Graphics card? If that's the case I'm wondering if doing a complete rebuild might be the better option. The case I have now is low end and I'm not very fond of it. I know some people do builds that are in the 500-600 price range.Might be worth it to just build a new machine then?

save up a bit more if you wanna get a new build.

^Agree, if you can already afford $500, don't stop there. At the very least shoot for something 6 TFLOPS capable on the GPU, because for $500 you could get a One X that has that level of Graphics power (980 Ti).

Not suggesting you get a One X, PC is always better in the long run for game prices, modding, graphics quality, etc. It just takes a bit more than consoles price wise to get going. That's largely because consoles are launched at a slight loss, then they clean up on the high prices of the games.

I would save for a couple more months then look at holiday pricing on parts.

I'll likely just save up as you suggest. I am using pcpartpicker.com and it is super helpful. Even decent looking cases on there (I like ones with windows) are cheap. I have a rather turdish case right now so I may just get a new one.

Thanks for all the help guys, looking forward to building a machine!
