24 Pin to 12 Pin atx converter on Acer Motherboard

Hi guys, I have recently purchased a new PSU for my Acer Computer, however, my motherboard only has a 12 pin atx connector. I have ordered a converter but it won't be here for another month.I was wondering if I could just plug in the 24 pin and leave the other 12 hanging for now. Would that be safe? and would it affect any of my performances? Or should I just wait for the adapter to come?
