Terrible FPS count in Battlefield 1

I run a PNY GTX 1050 Ti 4G version, with 8GB ram, and an intel i5-4460 @ 3.2GHz. When I run Battlefield 1, the game plays beautifully for a while, then the sound begins crackling horribly, and then the game slows down, to the point of even freezing while the sound stops entirely only to suddenly recover. This always happens after the first 2 games or so, even with CPU priority at Realtime and all settings to power in Control Panel. However the game continues to run at 30-50 FPS, even with settings at medium and VSync off and frame limiter off. What is causing this awful FPS drop?

Solution
GeForce is good for quality play, the game will look as good as it can, but GeForce isn't so good at keeping the fps where you personally would prefer it. To get better fps, you'll need to drop some of the more cpu intensive settings, BF1 is murder on an i5. Things like viewing distance, any AA, physX, grass detail etc

My current audio driver is the Gioteck HC3 driver, dating to 2013. Gioteck's website has appeared to have gone offline altogether, meaning I cannot find an updated driver for the headset.

And that is likely the cause of your crackling audio. You have to choose your sound devices carefully. Many are not well supported driver wise.

I think I got the driver figured out, but I am still getting awful FPS, despite letting GeForce Experience optimize the game, in addition to using the "Gametime.maxvariablefps XX" command.

Makes sense, as my game suddenly stutters when a player attacks me, must be the game trying to prioritize the interaction but cannot as CPU is maxed, probably resulting in a drop I assume.

Yeah, it's not uncommon for BF1 to hit 100% usage on an i5. With little or no room to move, any new intensity added, like face to face with another player and the full interactions of such, is going to stress the cpu out some more and you'll see sizable fps hits as a result. Anything you can do to squash cpu usage even background stuff like Antivirus checks, windows store, Cortana etc will help.

^Yep, all the more so since he has only 8GB RAM. I'm surprised my old i7-950 handles the game as well as it does, though I DO have to lower settings. I also notice that scenes with lots of AI alerted, and especially scenes with busy AI AND physics going on, the FPS drops.

It's definitely a game for a robust CPU and GPU if you expect to use good settings. Can't wait to get my 8700k and 1080 Ti. They will easily shred this game on max settings even at 4k. About 70 FPS average according to TPU's benches.
