I'm looking for a wireless file server but without having to setup a full scale workstation to do the task. Basically I want to stream videos (mkv, mp4, avi) from a wireless NAS or equivalent file server to a laptop or to another computer. Can a NAS do the job. I'm new to the NAS field and hoping someone can clear up the confusion.

Thanks in advance

A NAS box should always be hardwired to your router.
After that, any WiFi negotiation is between your PC and the router. The router then talks to the NAS.

For instance...my Qnap NAS is wired directly to the router.
But I can access it from any system in the house, either wired or WiFi.

The optimal answer is to connect a NAS via a wired interface to your WIFI router. Then is it a question of can your WIFI router and your device get enough bandwidth between them. You should always leave a NAS as a wired device IMO.

Uncompressed 1080p or higher is very difficult to stream wirelessly.
