Hi all,

I have an Asus P8Z68-V-PRO Motherboard and despite a lot of research, I'm still puzzled as to which SSD I can buy that will be the fastest that will work with the motherboard.

I think I'm correct in thinking there's no point wasting money on an M.2 SSD as the MB doesn't have an M.2 slot, right?

So does that mean I need to stick with a PCIe SSD as the fastest option?

Can anyone confirm this?

A couple of other questions, once I figure out the above:
1) What SSD (around 500gb) would you recommend with this MB?
2) Which slot do I use to ensure it runs at full speed?

Thank you!

Solution

Yes, an SSD.
The above mentioned MX300, or the usual Samsung 850 EVO.

Thanks... does it make any difference that I will be using this as a storage drive only (for quick access to video and images) and not as a boot drive (i.e. it won't have my OS installed on it - I already run my OS from another SSD)?

Hi, thanks for your reply, can I clarify what you mean though, as a bit confused..

As per above, this will be used as a storage drive rather than a drive running my OS.

With that in mind, is the faster route to use a M.2 drive using a M.2 to PCIe adapter... OR is it better to just buy a "regular Sata III" SSD as USAFRet recommended?

The latency of a regular SSD and an NVMe drive is pretty much the same. Near zero.
The NVMe would be beneficial if you were actually transferring large files around.
But a video won't play any faster...:) (This is a good thing)

NVMe drives have their place. This use case is not it.

still suggest SATA SSD like the MX300.
make sure the other SSD is on one of the 6GB/s ports

Sorry I meant to ask - when you say a 'regular SATA III drive' do you still mean an SSD? Or are you saying buy a traditional spinning HDD sata III drive?

Thanks and apologies
