WD drive insanely slow, can't figure it out?

Hi all,

I have a WD 2TB drive WD2002FAEX 7200rpm Sata III drive that is running insanely slow. As in, when I click into picture folders (some holding 1000+ images) it takes literally minutes for them to show up even in list/detail form.

It never used to do this and I'm thinking it's got something to do with when I removed the drive from the case to move homes.

Could I have connected the wrong SATA connector when I re-installed it?

Any help appreciated... it is practically unusable at this point..

Thanks

Solution
Mechanical drives can't perform faster than SATA2. So it gives no benefit of connecting them to SATA3 port. But if your cable is not certified for SATA3 operation, this may cause increased error rate.

Yes.

Download MHDD magic boot disk...

Correct. But no, I didn't drop it. I've tried using HD Tune Pro 5.70 to do a read/write test, and it won't work on either. For the read test, it keeps giving me "Read Error: Test Aborted!" and it won't do the write test because apparently I have partitions.

I can browse files on the drive fine, but it ranges from super slow to just average... certainly not what it used to be?

I can't figure out how to post it on here but the HD tune health status shows a WARNING for (C5) Current Pending Sector...Current: 196 Worst: 196 Threshold: 0 Data:1356 "Number of unusable sectors: 1356"

No idea what this means?

Oops, here we go. Thanks for your help:

There's definitely a problem with your drive.
1st - read and write error rate is too high for WD drive. Normally it should be 0.
2nd - there's a lot of pending sectors, that need to be resolved. Pending - means, that drive is unable to read the sector and is waiting for it to get overwritten.

I'd suggest changing sata cable first. Also if the drive is connected to sata 3 port, then connect it to sata 2 port.
To resolve pending sectors use mhdd - operation scan with remap option on.

BTW - what's the motherboard model name?

It's an Asus P8Z68-PRO.

I've opened her up and I see both the Adata SSD I'm running (for OS) and this WD are on the SATA 3 ports.

Can I ask why you recommend I switch the WD to a SATA 2 port? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of me having bought it as a SATA 3 drive?

Re cable: something like this OK? https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-18-Inch-Cable-Locking-90-Degree/dp/B009GUXU52/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1508100315&sr=8-3&keywords=sata+3+cable

Also, if you have a link to somewhere that explains to me how to run MHDD that would be great! I see it doesn't start up as an .exe but rather a boot program?

Yes.

Download MHDD magic boot disk.
http://hddguru.com/software/2006.02.10-Magic-Boot-Disk/
Use HP USB format tool to create bootable USB using this iso.
http://filehippo.com/download_hp_usb_disk_storage_format_tool/
Then copy files from iso to your USB (without overwriting any existing ones).
Boot from USB and run mhdd.

Thanks Skynet... do I need to be worried about my drive data when using MHDD... do you suggest I back up first? I'd rather not as backing it all up would take me days given how slow the drive is going. But don't want to put a lot of vids and images at risk... thank you and apologies for all the questions.
