CPU or Motherboard Dead?

After a series of tests with different components I have basically determined that either my CPU or motherboard is dead :(. I do not have an extra CPU or motherboard in order to test which one it is. I am quite sure its not the ram since I have tried booting with either stick in either slot. (Unless I got two defective sticks).

The motherboard boots and powers all fans and other components when booted without the 8 pin CPU header. When attempted to boot with the 8 pin CPU header, computer will turn on fora brief moment and instantly turn back off. This cycle will repeat 3-5 times before it stays off.

This leads me to believe the CPU is the problem, since the motherboard is doing fine power other components. With a system speaker installed, no beeps happen when booted but this may be because the computer is shutting off too fast.

Is there anything else I can do to determine which one is the issue? I need to know which one to send back. Thanks for any help let me know if you need anymore information.

Specs:
i5-7500
MSI B250M PRO-VD
Gigabyte Windforce GTX 1060
16gb G. Skill Ripjaws DDR4 RAM

I am using the Extreme Power Plus 500 PSU from cooler master. Yeah I tried it without hte GPU and with other PSUs, no luck. Everything (Mobo, CPU and RAM) was working at one point I should add.

I agree. It worked for a week and a half. I ordered a new case and when moving it over it stopped working. I checked all the wiring 20 times by now and had friends look at it also. My theory is there was probably a short that occurred from one of the standoffs that came with the case. That or a power supply failure that resulted in a short maybe? Not sure.

Unlikely the PSU shorted but this is good information. You likely do have a short somewhere. Worst case scenario you damaged the board in transit, but more likely this is a simple fix. Pull the board from the new case and check the standoffs. Every standoff should match exactly to a hole in the motherboard. If it does not then REMOVE it. Then reinstall the board making sure to snugly tighten each standoff. If you had even one touching the board improperly it will cause this issue.

Just removed the board from everything and powered it ontop of the box it came in. Nothing fancy attached just RAM and CPU and a hard drive. No luck same issue. Energizes for one second then shuts right back off. I'm wondering If I missed a stray stand off and caused some permanent damage to the board. I know most boards have quite a bit of short protection put in place to protect the CPU so i'll probably end up sending the board back and crossing my fingers.

Yes that would be the worst case scenario, same problem but along the way that extraneous standoff somehow damaged the board by scratching a trace. Seems the most likely scenario. If you have a magnifying glass and some patience you can probably find it, not that you can do anything about it. Time for an RMA
