My cpu has a higher wattage than my motherboard supports

When I first bought my pc I bought it pre built and recently I have been playing ping and ran into FPS problems so about a month ago I installed an amd fx 8350 and found it was running really well. But I ran into some problems with the cpu fan not spinning sometimes when I turn it on so I was researching it and found out that my motherboard(msi 760gm-p23) doesn’t support 125 watt cpus even though before I bought my cpu I checked on a website and it said my cpu is supported. What should I do?

The board has a weak VRM setup(3+1) which is why the 125w cpus are not offcially supported. Even many boards with a 4+1 VRM setup struggle/trottle with the 125w cpus and many of those even have them in their supported list. According to MSI's website the 8350 and other 125w FX cpus are not officially supported, CPU support list.

The main issue with the weaker VRM setups and 125w FX cpus is VRM throttling when the CPU is under a large load the cpu will only run at ~1.4Ghz which will cause a massive loss of performance and in tasks like gaming can make the game unplayable. This kind of stress will also reduce the life of the motherboard as the VRMs will eventually fail.

However your issue of the fan not spinning is not one I have every seen attributed to the VRM issue. That issue sounds more like a problem with the fan.

Is returning the cpu still an option?

I can use the amd warranty because of the fan but I think they just would send a new one. Would you recommend a certain cheap suitable motherboard and how much will it reduce the lifetime to approximately? Thanks

Yes. However as I asked earlier is it still possible to return the CPU?
180 quid is alot to spend on a dead platform that didn't even perform all that well when it was new 5 yrs ago.

Well I think it’s too late to refund through amazon and if I went to am4 it would cost like £400 to get the same performance. Would you say I would have a year before the motherboard would actually go if the most demanding game I play is pubg? Also I’m not that experienced in changing parts in a pc so building a new one could be a challenge
