Hello Everyone,

First off, I don't know too much about computers except what some of the parts are called and pretty much the basics.

My speccy information has been attached below. I'm looking for the best pathway in upgrading my current desktop to match or even overmatch the demands provided by most of the upcoming games. I also record music on the side through a DAW (I know some people have said there are certain processors that can balance smooth gaming and provide stress free multi-tasking such as music recording and other heavy cpu utilizing editing activities). I'm interested and curious about the new ryzen processors (AMD Ryzen 7 1700X Processor), or should I stick with the intel i7's?

So in a nutshell, I'm currently looking for a new motherboard that will be good for a few years and an optimal processor that's balanced between gaming and editing work (I especially don't want the processor to bottleneck. My set budget is about $600 to $1000 (This just includes the processor and motherboard. If price effeciency is possible, then lets include the graphics card which is about $500 when released). I've made up my mind on purchasing a 1070 ti (when it comes out of course), I just need some recommendations and suggestions from some of you guys that know a lot more than me and are knowledged in this area. I'm also actively researching and doing my homework with the current experience and knowledge I have. Thank you so much in advance, it means a lot! =)

You will also need new ddr4 ram. The ryzen's are great and they plan to stick with the am4 platform for awhile. The new coffee lake cpus from intel are also great, though right now they are basically sold out everywhere, and they are on the z370 platform. Either way would be great, i have an i7 7700k and I am very happy with it, though with your editing and stuff i would assume you would want more than 4 cores/8 threads, and the z270 platform is basically dead now.

So i would suggest to you the 1700x a nice am4 motherboard and 16 gb of ddr4.

You can swap out the motherboard to your preferred brand(I love asus) or get a more expensive x370 one. And if you are planning to overclock you can always spend more and get a much beefier cooler (cryorig r1 universal would be my choice). Ryzen does perform better with higher speed ram, so whatever ram you decide on make sure its at least rated at 3000.

Thank you so much Chad! I was looking more into Ryzen as well. And I already have an EVO cooler so I should be good with just the CPU, RAM and motherboard. Thank you again for putting your time into this! By any chance, would you know if I have to reinstall the whole OS if I upgrade the motherboard? I mean the OS and everything is still going to be on my SATA drive.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, its always best to do a clean install of windows. You may be able to plug in your harddrive and boot it right up, but most likely it either wont boot or you will run into tons of problems down the road. I would also suggest updating to windows 10 (just my opinion). On your cooler, that will work just fine. You should be able to contact coolermaster and they will send you out the AMD AM4 bracket free of charge.
