Ok so I've changed mobo/cpu from intel to amd. Do I need to make a clean install of the windows? Moreover, in my rig I've got a ssd in which windows are installed and a hdd. Do I need to format them both?

Solution

I meant applications on the HDD. They will not work with the new OS.
But also, all your current applications on the SSD will also need to be reinstalled. You're starting with a clean slate. A bare OS.

Files currently existing on the HDD will be accessible just like before.

Which OS is this?
If Win 10, you should have done this before changing any parts:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/20530/windows-10-reactivating-after-hardware-change

Clean install?
Always recommended, often required.
And just the OS drive....the SSD. Leave the other one disconnected until everything works with the new hardware and the SSD.

Thank you very much for your quick answer and the helpful topic about the win activation! So I'll just clean install the ssd and connect the hdd after the install is done. Last thing about the hdd, does it matter if there are any previous drivers left in the hdd? I always install drivers in ssd but I'm asking just in case.

Your hardware drivers install on the OS drive. You usually can't influence that.

Any applications on that drive will not work with the new OS. They'll have to be reinstalled.

When you're saying "applications on that drive" by that drive you mean the ssd? Plus, will I have access to any files left in the hdd? I'm sorry I'm asking that much but I don't know many things for this situation.

Alright! I get it now. And lastly, is clean install and format the same thing? If no, should I format any of the drives before install windows? Trying to figure out how all this work before it gets too confusing :pt1cable:

During the install on the SSD, when it asks 'where', select Custom.
You'll be presented with a list of all existing partitions.
Select each one, DELETE.
Leaving one large blank space.
Format, and let Windows then create what it needs.

And do this with ONLY the SSD connected.
Only reconnect the HDD after it is all up and running.
No need to format the HDD.
