CPU speed vs. cores in MMO's/online games

Hello,

I've been browsing the internet for quite a while looking for an answer for my question.

I tend to play mostly online games / MMO's (Guild wars 2 for instance, but also take games like TERA, Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy Online, etc etc in mind) and at the moment I run a 7700k in combination with a 1080ti, so more then enough horsepower. BUT: I want the most fps I can because I run a 240hz monitor.

Now I know MMO's use a fair bit of the CPU in order to render/calculate everything.. But now the 8700k and x299 is out I wonder what would have a more positive effect for the framerate:

CPU clockspeed or CPU cores?

And also, if the 4-core 7700k running at 5ghz vs the 6-core 8700k at 5ghz: would there be a substantial difference because of the 2 more cores and 4 more threads?

Thanks!

Ps. I know the upgrade isn't 'worth' it, but I still want to know ;)

It depends on how CPU intensive the game is. The less CPU intensive the game is less the lower the performance gains. The number of cores and Hyper Threading (HT) do not mean anything if the game has not been designed to use more than 2 / 4 cores, and the vast majority of games do not make use of HT. The only MMO that I am aware of that absolutely uses HT is Overwatch. However, I am not a hardcore gamer trying to squeeze every last FPS I can get by throwing money at my PC, and I do not play many games anymore.

Elder Scrolls Online only uses 3 cores, and it definitely does not make use of HT.
