Lately, I've been having an issue where I put my PC into sleep mode while I go off to eat dinner. When I come back and move my mouse (or press a key on my keyboard) to wake the computer up, The light on the power button just slowly fades out. Sometimes it wakes itself up when I press the power button and resumes the session, but other times it just completely shuts down and I have to start it back up. Most of the time, my session is saved when it does eventually wake up. I've also noticed that, when it does wake up, the hard drive utilization skyrockets to 90%+, but then equalizes back to normal after a few minutes.

Also, when I wake up in the morning after shutting my computer down the following night, it doesn't want to start. I press the power button a few times and nothing. After turning off the PSU for a few minutes and then back on, it usually powers up.

This is a custom built computer that I built myself a few years back. Up til this point, I haven't had any issues to speak of, so I have no idea what it could be. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's my build:

it could be the hard drive but due to it not wanting to even power on i would recommend checking every connection in the system and make sure everything is seated correctly if you have already done that then the next thing i would check is the PSU and front panel connectors, try jumping the computer manually while the psu is plugged in if it powers up then its the connection on the front panel if not then it could be to do with the mobo or psu. as for the waking up from sleep mode im honestly not sure, personally i dont turn off my computer due to it degrading (admittedly not by much) the components over time with being turned on and off so maybe just leave it running 24/7 it doesnt make much of a difference to energy cost (Kw/h here is cheap and i only use half a one per hour).

I've briefly checked the connectors and everything seemed to be properly seated. Though, I might look over them again to make sure. As for jumping the computer manually, how would I do that?

Ah, I see. That seems easy enough. I'll try that and see if it works.Hopefully it's just an issue with the power switch. Thanks for help, by the way.

Well, I did what you said. Woke up today and my computer wouldn't turn on. So I tried swapping the reset and power switches and nada. So I jumped the two power pins and it turned on right away. I'm guessing the power switch is the cause. I'm guessing I could try to find a new switch assembly? Or get a new case?

I would uninstall the drivers for the mouse and keyboard, then have Windows automatically reinstall it for you.
