PSU for a car stereo

I'm using an older PSU to power up a car stereo in the garage. I read that I can use an old DVD ROM to send power (load) of the 5volt line so the PSU will work/start. When I connect the DVD ROM, do I connect the purple wire from the PSU (5v) to the red line on DVD (5v) or does it need to connect to the yellow line (12v). Any help would be appreciated. My old setup failed after several years, but it was a simpler PSU that did not require a load. Thanks

So I have a 20 pin connector. You're suggesting that I do not use the purple wire but one of the red 5 V wires and solder it to one of the red wires on the Molex going to the DVD player in order to have a load that will allow the power supply to run. As of now I do have the green wire connected to a ground wire in the PSU fan Will turn on for a few seconds and then stop

So, CountMike, if I understand the gray PSU OK wire turns in to a 5v line since the green wire has been "shorted" then the gray line will carry the load to allow the PSU to run

Sizzling, I voted down by accident. Yes, a car battery does fluctuate and a car stereo is able to take the fluctuations, I think somewhere up to at least 15 to 16v I read somewhere

Yeah, that's how it is when connected to MB, I haven't seen any PSU, specially ATX, that don't have all output voltages when jump started by Green and black but it has to be connected as long as you want PSU to run.

Does it matter which yellow wire I use? Both the PSU and the DVD player are powering on, but the fan only runs for a second. Not sure what my next step is.

The PSU only seems to turn on for a second or two and emits a sound but doesn't power up the stereo or DVD rom that is connected. I wonder if I need to have something on the 3.3v line as well.

Update... I got one step closer. I am able to power a case fan on the 5v line (for some reason it only will work when connected to the purple PSU wire). The car stereo powers up, but only for a second while the case fan continues to run. Any more advice? Much appreciated!
