I'm building a new Ryzen PC. For the time being I am getting 8 gigabytes of ram (2x4 kit) but I'm probably going to get 8 more some time in the future. My question is can I use 2 different brands in a motherboard with 4 slots for DDR4 RAM.

Solution
I think the answer is yes, it looks like you will have 4 sticks, of two brands each. Al long as each brand has its own channel. (typically slots 1&3 and slots 2&4), it should work fine.

short answer 100% maybe.
while each set may work fine alone whether they will work together is possible.
if you do get differing sticks before trusting the system to serious work thoroughly test that they work together without instability or error. make sure the new sticks have the same timings and voltages as the current RAM. CPUz can provide this information.
memtest86 - run this for three passes or overnight. if both sticks will work together you will get no errors and the passes will be higher than 2. lower pass numbers may indicate rebooting during overnight test.

Mostly yes. I usually say:
if its different brands you have 70% chance it will work
if its same brands different models you have 80% chance it will work
if its same brands same models bought year apart you have 95% chance it will work
this table is quite accurate :)
