Hey,

I currently have a custom built gaming PC but I feel the need to upgrade a little further but I don’t know what to do first.

Below are my specs

Intel i5-4690k 3.5GHz 1150socket

Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2x4) 1866mhz Ram

MSI GTX 970 4GB GPU

MSI Z97 GAMING 5 Motherboard 1150 socket

1TB 7200rpm HDD

600W BeQuiet! Gold rated PSU

I’m mainly focused on GPU/RAM/CPU as they are expensive but if I need to upgrade COU would I be best going for an 1151 socket motherboard to suit more CPUs?

All help appreciated

Thanks

The i5 4690K will still be a high performer in todays games. So personally I wouldn't upgrade the CPU, I would simply get an effective third party cooler and overclock.

You could potentially upgrade your GPU to a GTX 1070 for example, but that's up to you whether you believe the price is worth the gains.

If it were me, I would swap your RAM to go up to 16GB of at least 2133 (newer games are showing somewhat improved FPS from 1600 to 2133+).
Then potentially opt for an SSD for OS and key games.

Summary IMO:
CPU - i5 4690K is still solid, and is overclockable
GPU - Still good, if you want to splash out you can upgrade to a GTX 1070+ or RX580 (worse performance). Potentially even more.
RAM - 8GB is just enough, but newer games are...

RAM - 8GB is just enough, but newer games are utilising more ram and some are scaling better with faster RAM, so 16GB of 2133 will make your build more applicable to modern games.
SSD may be an option to consider.

suggested upgrades if I was you;

1. CPU upgrade to I7-4790K will provide 30% increase in processing speed. (passmark score below)

2. Get another 8GB of ram , this will cut down on your pagefile.sys data transfers and speed up your system
3. Get an SSD drive. this will foremost speed up your OS and games you store on it.
4. The 970 performs better than a 1060 3gb and less than the 1060 6GB, so if you going to upgrade video cards, gets a 980TI or a 1080 anything lower is pointless.
