Super low-power PCI-e graphics card

Hi folks,

This is probably a slightly strange question for this section, but here goes...:

I'm putting together a cheap server for home virtualisation - this is a self-teaching project. I've settled on a Ryzen 5 1600 in an Asus Prime B350M-A. Unfortunately, it won't boot without a video card in place.

This server will be used headless most of the time (OK - occasionally, it might need a VGA console) so I want something that will suck as little power as possible while idle, and ideally produce little or no heat - but that will also be supported. I have an old fanless 9800GT - will that be effectively as low power and low thermal output as a cheap, less powerful GPU when sitting in idle, or is it worth spending 20 quid to get something smaller?

Ta!

Adam...

the 9800GT has a max TDP of 105W, though, in the use case you describe, I don't see it ever drawing that much power.

The 710 GT and the R5 230 are both rated at a max TDP of 19W. I can't imagine the 9800 GT at all drawing less power under low-demand use than the two newer cards, though.

The lowest power, most efficient card of the newer series of cards is the GT 1030. It draws about 30-40W of power under load, and since it only draws that much power, it will not generate much heat either. It's a very good and efficient card for your use case.

You already have a 9800GT though, and if you're using it only as a display then it works completely fine.

Thanks folks - when I talk about a low power solution to replace the 9800GT, I mean something like a GT 710 or a Radeon R5 230 - much less grunty than a GT 1030. I don't care about efficiency (at least, not in terms of graphics performance per watt used): purely low power draw...

So, I guess the important part of the question is: given that the card will only be asked to output a black VGA screen with a white text login request (I won't even have a graphical desktop running), will a low-power card like the above draw less than the 9800GT?
