So I just moved into an apartment and had internet installed. With a wired connection to the router I get ~100mbps with wifi though I only get around 35mbps. The apartment has telephone wall jacks in every room. Could I get one of these, http://a.co/3sKTBvA, to run ethernet to each room?

Solution

NOPE... that adapter just turns an ethernet cable into a Crossover Cable... A crossover cable allows two computers to directly connect to one another to move/transfer data. If you want internet all over.. you'll need to connect very long ethernet cables from your router to all the rooms or use a wireless router.

no that is a crossover adapter, it allows PCs to network directly with only a cable.
pc>cable>pc. most modern NIC Network Interface Cards can auto detect and crossover internally so adapters like this are mainly for older equipment.

the wiring in the wall should be able to carry data, but you may get tons of crosstalk if the wires are not TP - Twisted Pairs.
you would need to put a network punch-down block where all the phone lines converge, change the faceplates in each room to be RJ-45 from the RJ-11. once the faceplates are changed and the block is tied into the router you should be good to go.
there are other steps I missed but as you can see its a weekend of work, plus tools and equipment. maybe a router with MIMO and a better wireless NIC are in order?

That adapter is to turn a CAT5 (or CAT6) cable into a "crossover" cable..it doesn't convert a phone jack to a network, or vice versa. The problem is that a phone line is only 4 wires, and a network is 8...so no, you can do anything with it.

a network cable is 8 wires but only 4 are used.
as long as you have 4 conductors you can have ethernet.
