What causes a red screen, no error, whilst gaming?

He guys,

Last weekend I have assembled my pc! Immedeatly I started playing BF1 and I noticed that my pc got very hot, measured a temp of 75 Celcius (167 FH).

Yesterday I started playing PUBG and after 2 or 3 rounds the screen froze and showed a red screen, no errors, no text, just a red screen. My headphones also made a 'drrrrrr' kind of sound. After 5-6 seconds my pc just rebooted, I quickly tried to go in to the bios to check the temperature. It was around 65 degrees Celcius (149 Fh).

After that I removed one plate of my pc case to give it a bit more airflow. I just continued playing and after 1,5 hours it happened again. I then decided to quit and started doing research on the red screen. I made my hypotheses about my pc problems only more ambiguous.

I've no idea where to start troubleshooting, is it the power supply, is it the heat. I will order some coolers anyway because it certainly gets too hot, but i've no idea how to tell if that caused the red screen...

This is my build (Windows 10):
-Ryzen 5 1600 (processor)
-Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3 (motherboard)
-Aorus RX580 (graphics card)
-Corsair VS Series VS550 (power supply)
-Sharkoon VS4-V (case)

I can give additional details about the various parts of my pc. I'm curious what you guys can tell me.

Kind regards,

Anne

Are any of your components overclocked and are all drivers updated? Is the Bios of your motherboard up to date?
Some users have reported red screen while playing Battlefield games, so if you own AMD card, you might want to try and install AMD drivers without Catalyst Control Center

I have not overclocked anything and I assume I have updated the most recent drivers, because I installed everything two days ago. But I will check this, thank you. As will I for the mortherboard.

Hey, Anne

Are you on the new AMD drivers 17.10.1 that released on 10 October? I'm on that driver with a R9 390 and just got the exact same thing you described. I've been tinkering with CPU overclocks so I'm not sure if it's the driver or my overclock. If you are on the 17.10.1 driver I think we are onto something here.

A temperature of 75 Celsius is competely fine for GPUs, by the way. I run my GPU on 79 Celcius on full load, most of them are rated for 94 Celcius, I believe. For CPU it is on the hotter side though.

Thank you!

He Thanks for your reply,

After all this, i've installed three fans to give my case some airflow. The temperature dropped to a staggering 30 degrees Celsius and a constant 50-60 degrees for GPU and Graphics Card. Everything was going fine, till yesterday. I started playing PUBG againg and after 1 - 1,5 hour the red screen appeared again. I did nothing, let the pc reboot itself and continued playing for another 2-3 hours. No further problems, however, i have no way of telling what caused that incidental red screen. The driver i have currently installed is 17.9.3

So I'm not sure the driver is the problem. Is your red screen also completely red? Like, without any text or error-messages or something?

Thanks!

Oh yeah, completely red, fire red, no text and with the same "drrrrrr" sound and all. Curious that we have the same problem on different drivers, could be same problem in both, could be something else. The problem we have must be the same cause, I presume? I never encountered something like this. I've had crashes with the same sound but nothing with a screen like that. I know that red screens can mean that GPU is dying but since we both have it and your card must be relatively new, I don't think that is what it means. I have undervolted my card, although, that has been stable for a very long time, did you undervolt your card?

Thanks!

My CPU is brand spanking new, I did not undervolt my card. Do you have anything else similar with my build? Maybe we can find our answer in a different component

This is my build (Windows 10):
-Ryzen 5 1600 (processor)
-Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3 (motherboard)
-Aorus RX580 (graphics card)
-Corsair VS Series VS550 (power supply)

It doesn't seem like we have something similar other than Windows 10.

This is my system:
- i5 6600k
- MSI R9 390
- MSI Gaming M5 z170a
- EVGA G3(?) 750w

I reverted to 17.9.3 drivers yesterday and haven't had a crash like it yet, but I've only gamed for about an hour so I'm not sure. It must be something with the card though, I think. If it is a heating problem, it would just shut down. If it is a CPU problem, you are likely to just freeze or get a BSOD. Red screens, I believe, is some typical GPU issue. We both have an AMD card so I'm still leaning to a driver issue or something like that but I can't find many other people with the same problem, peculiar.

Hey, I was just wondering if you got a red screen again. I got one again last night, which is very strange. Sunday I've been gaming the whole day, for like maybe 6-7 hours, no problems whatsoever. Yesterday, however, I just wanted to play a few rounds of Battlegrounds and after 1 hour or so, the red screen appeared again.

Because I've installed the fans, checked for Bios update, considering the fact I have not overclocked anything, it can't be a Windows problem either. It must be a power supply problem or something with the graphics card. However, the power supply is, theoretically speaking, sufficient. Qasim1991 said it could be also something to do with me installing Catalyst Control Center, but I cannot find something named like that in the software program of my graphics card. Maybe you did found something like that?

I'm still on the 17.9.3 driver and never had them anymore, but I keep searching on various sites to see if someone else has the same problem, unfortunately I haven't found a similar issue.

Catalyst Control Center was the old driver from AMD before Crimson ReLive. They used to install it together with Crimson Relive aswell but they stopped doing that since a few months ago, I believe.

How long have you been gaming on your current system? Have you tried performing a clean install with DDU or the feature in the installer?

I hope you can find the solution soon!

Thanks for your reaction and support.

I have this system since last Saturday, most of the components I mentioned are brand spanking new. That is also why I think it is not a driver problem. Because I am using the exact same driver you are using from the beginning. I've check the event viewer and I think my power supply is juuuust not enough, probably because I've set the settings on ultra. I have downloaded GPU-Z to monitor everything. I'm just going to do that and if it happens again I can determine whether or not it really is a power supply problem.

Hey,

I know it has been a while, but I just experienced it again. It did not happen for a couple of weeks but now it did.
I was wondering if you found a solution for it in this time, or maybe what the cause is/was?

For me it happened when I was playing Battlefield 1. That game is super CPU intensive and it might be my overclock but then again, you don't have an overclock and we have the exact same thing. It may be our graphics card failing but yours is new. I'm clueless, really.

Hope to hear from you.

He man! Sorry to hear u did not resolved it. I did not experienced it again. To be perfectly clear: I did NOT experience a red screen while playing Battlefield 1, I did however got a error pop-up (and BF would shut itself of) that said something stopped BF1 from working. After some Googling sessions, I went to Origin and right-click on BF1 and hit repair game. I did not receive that error again, also I run BF1 on ultra high settings, everything maxed out without any problems.

Now, I did however received a red screen while playing Player Unknown Battlegrounds. First it appeared quite a lot, after that ive installed three fans for airflow in my pc. After that I did not received a red screen for a while, after that however it happen 2 or three times. Also i experienced a lot of lag, sometimes even network lag. So i've tuned down some settings from ultra down to high. At first I figured if I can play a game like BF1 at ultra high, surely I can play Battlegrounds on ultra high. Apparently not...... The weird things is though, everywhere a red screen is mentions people say it can be a lot of different problems but most of the time it has something to do with the graphics card. I do not have a lot of knowledge of computers, I always need help of my IT-friends, but this is my theory: The lag in Battleground is caused by the network (from PUBG) this lag is badly comprehended by my graphics card which causes it to crash.

It may be complete bullshit, i dont know. But tuning down the settings worked for me, and I am planning to do some more tuning down. Accordingly, I think our problems are completely different, we just have the same symptoms. If I were you I would reverse the overclocking to be absolutely sure that is not the problem. By the way, I also downloaded GPU-Z to monitor everything while I was gaming, to be absolute sure of the heat levels and how many watts my graphics card was eating. I found nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe it would be a good idea for you as well to download GPU-Z so you can do a wide berth on the troubleshooting.

Let me/us know what you did and what helped! Good luck and may the force be with you!

Hey, thanks for your help.
I have MSI Afterburner and Rivatuner running at all times to monitor my hardware. The weird thing is that everything does seem okay. It only crashed like this 2 times and both on quite intensive games. I also play Mount and Blade and it never crashed on that game, I think because it isn't intensive.

I'm probably going to double-check my overclock but at the same time I don't think that is the cause. I have stresstest it for over an hour and it didn't show any signs of instabilities. And I think it would crash more often then but I'm not sure about that.

As you said, there many people with the same problem but different causes. Some say it's typical CPU overclock, some say memory and others GPU.

The strangest part is that it is so inconsistent for me, and also for you if I understand correctly. For me there was about 20 days between first and last crash, while playing the same games I played before.

I just got the error for the second time this week, the first time playing bf4 and the second time playing Golf It! My hardware isn't getting too hot to run and it definitely isn't too weak to run these games. The only thing I have in common with you two is the AMD GPU and Windows 10. Have either of you two found a solution to this or is it still unsolved?

I haven't experienced it since my last reply. I don't know what is causing it but my suspicion still lies with the drivers. My main reason for this is because it is so inconsistent and happens in large periods of time. I update drivers whenever there is an update available. We all have AMD cards so this makes my suspicion even stronger. Since the last time I did a full clean reinstall with DDU though, so that might help you!

Hey guys, i too have an AMD graphics card, brand new, my entire system is just 2 weeks old. I got this red screen crash twice, once yesterday and once today, on both Metro 2033 and Dying light, after about 2 hours of gaming. So far, i have only tried downgrading graphics driver from 17.11.4 to 17.11.1 but i still got a red screen.
My build: (Windows 10)
-R5 1600
-MSI B350 TOMAHAWK
-Sapphire Radeon RX 580
-Corsair VS Series VS650
-G Skill Ripjaws 16gb 2400 mhz(i run it at 2133)

From what i see, it may be from the driver, but i am not at all sure.
I may try to put another 2 fans in to see if its a heat issue.

Hi,

Have you tried rolling back with DDU?

I understand your fear it might be a heat issue, but I think this is unlikely because most cards will start to throttle when it reaches too hot temperatures, unless you have turned that off.

I still haven't had the red screen after I did the DDU reinstall and I'm currently on 17.11.4 since two days ago. I've been on 17.11.1 for a long time out of fear it might come back.

Hope you can find a solution.

I haven't had the error happen in about 3 weeks and I haven't changed anything. It appears to have just disappeared on my end...

So i did driver uninstall with DDU and installed again 17.11.1 then came adrenaline so i uninstalled again with DDU an installed 17.12.1 and it appeared it was solved.(yesterday i played dying light for 4-5 hours no problems) But today i got a red screen again after 2.5 hrs. Right now i have reinstalled adrenaline with ddu, hopefully it will be fixed now. What i think i should do is just have small gaming sessions and give the GPU breaks :)). Have you had red screen with adrenaline so far?

Although it won't help any of you I solved my red screens by uninstalling the gigabyte software that they bundle with their GPUs for overclocking and controlling the functions of the card. I think it was called aeorus engine or something like that. I have a gigabyte rx 580.

Guys i think i have fixed it. What I did was i went into Wattman and increased power limit to +50%, and also i set temperature to manual, then i put the temperature sliders one to 45C and the other on 75C. Press ok and thats it. Been playing AC Origins, no red screen even after over 3 hrs and it's a gpu heavy game. What i think the problem was at least with me were 2 things. 1 is the fact that wattman has these so called "states" for the gpu and when you go from lets say state 4 all way to 7 instantly, the gpu can crash and red screen. Increasing the powerlimit would reduce this delay. The other 1 would be that i just wouldn't hear my fans only when i was lets say above 75c, and from what i heard red screens can be caused by VRM overheating. So by making the fans gradually increasing and stay around 2300 rpm during gameplay u ensure that the vrm is nice and cool. Hope this helps you guys!

Hey guys, sorry for not being active for a while. I fixed the problem myself. It turned out there some corrupted files from Windows which caused the actual problem. My PC also got too hot and I added some fans which caused my pc to not get too hot anymore. But the real problem for this easy turned out to be Windows.....
