Looking at building a new PC for mainly gaming and unreal engine. A company that supplies parts has suggested I go for the i5 8600k instead of a 8700k and upgrade coolers and Power supply. Any advice.? Is the 8700k overkill at the moment.?
Thanks and very much appreciate the help.

Get the best CPU you can afford within reason. If you can afford a Core i9 7980XE and you're only a gamer you don't need that many CPU cores. So get the best one within reason. It's reasonable to think that the Core i7 8700K might last a little longer for gaming than the Core i5 8600K but they will probably last a similar amount of time. I can't really say what will happen in the future but I can say that hyperthreading gives about ~30% more performance. So that means around 8 cores worth of performance on the i7 and 6 cores on the i5. On the 7th gen the i7 had about 5 cores worth of performance and the i5 had 4 cores. The i5 7600K at 5GHz is pretty good but the 8600K at 5GHz is better than the 7700K at 5GHz. And do you really think the...

No such thing as overkill if it fits in your budget. We've had hyperthreaded hexcore CPUs for about 7 years now, back when the core i7 series first came out. You'd be doing yourself a favor by getting the 8700k over the 8600, but if your supplier is suggesting the i5 over the i7, it could be due to very limited availability, so it could be a while before you can get your hands on one.

i say go all in. sometmes when you stop short and use a lesser cpu, you will always think that you are missing out on maximum performance.

then you will have the thoughts that you should have bought the higher end.

Trust me.. i know

No. It's going to be a long time before the 7700K is truly outdated. Only when games start to require 6 cores as a minimum requirement will the 7700K be outdated. So the Core i5 8600K will last even longer. I don't think you'll have to worry much about how long it will last. So the Core i5 8600K seems like the logical choice.

Great explanation.

as i mentioned before in another thread. even the 8400 beat the 7700k on stock in most benchmarks.

get the 8th gen. no matter if its 8600k or 8700k..

yes if you can afford or think u can squeeze out cash to purchase the 8700k. go for it

if you can't, the 8600k is another great cpu to choose without a doubt

your going with a very high end cpu then droping down to low end budget gpu which is as much if not more important in a gaming computer upgrade the GPU depending on resolution 1060 for 1080p 1070 for 2560x1440 and higher for 4k
