hard drive is not working

When I connect my external HDD, it does show drive on my PC opens up and but I cant access any file it takes too much time and the entire system stops working?

-Do you have that data backed up anywhere?
-Have you tested the drive on another system or plugged it into a DVD player to see if it shows up and can activate a file?
-You can try scanning the drive in question for faults:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2641432/check-your-hard-disk-for-errors-in-windows-7
This works the same on OS's after Windows 7.
-Also try and scan the drive in question for viruses or other malarious program:
