I just purchased an SSD and want to take Windows 10 from the HDD to the SSD. I want to keep everything on my HDD except windows obviously. I have seen a software that can clone windows to my SSD but will windows still being on my HDD be an issue? I just want to have windows on my SSD and all other things on my HDD with exception to certain steam games. Any ideas?

Solution

Possibility of moving windows from HDD to SSD depends on:
  • how your HDD is partitioned?
    how full is your HDD?
    how large is your SSD?
Basically windows needs to be installed in a separate partition and used space in windows partition must be smaller than your new SSD. Then you can transfer windows to SSD quite easily.

Can you post screenshot from Disk Management?

Can i just disconnect the HDD and plug in the SSD and do a fresh windows install on the SSD, then reconnect the HDD and have windows on the SSD and then everything is still on my HDD? Or will windows still being installed on the HDD be a problem?

Solution

Yes you can but that still doesn't guarantee that all programs still on HDD would work. Most programs/games install some parts in C: disk and make changes to registry even when installed on another disk/partition.
