i5 8400, not good enough for Z370 motherboard?

I am keep hearing from many people that i5-8400 is not good enough for Z370 board and should wait for cheaper motherboard.

Gigabyte HD3P Z370 motherboard is only about $130. I don't know how much cheaper I should expect but $130 doesn't sound too expensive to me.

Also, people say 8400 is a great CPU so I don't know why they treat 8400 like it's a bad CPU and needs a bad motherboard.

Could someone clarify this for me?
I want to buy 8400 but all these talk makes me wanna wait for cheaper motherboard next year but then we get 12nm AMD pinnacle ridge Feb 2018. Does this mean I should wait for pinnacle ridge?

The type of CPU I want to buy and use for next 6 years is something that has low power consumption, low temperature, and still perform over 60 fps at 1080p ultrawide resolution for games such as metro, anthem, far cry 5...etc. I currently have 970GTX, want to upgrade to 1070 but will wait for 2070 or 2080 as long as they still got low power consumption, temperature, and good performance. I don't like my room getting too hot. I can afford 8700K however, I don't like its power consumption and temperature. I want something that is balanced well around and 8400 seems like the one and I only use PC for gaming and internet.

I don't think you can go any wrong with i5-8400.

There will be always something coming out in near future.
If you wait, you can eventually end up waiting forever for the next big thing.

The problem is you would normally buy a Z370 to overclock, in which the i5 8400 is not capable of doing. Since Z370 is the only option it's still fine, however you will not get the full potential of the motherboard.

To answer your other question, i5 8400 will likely run games at 1080p for the next 6 years pretty efficiently. Right now is probably one of the best times to build a PC, since competition is very stiff between Intel and AMD, no matter what you choose you're probably getting a good CPU for a great price.

Wait for Pinnacle Ridge if you want, it'll probably be pretty damn good. The safe buy is getting stuff that we have information on right now though. You'll wait for Pinnacle Ridge and then hear something new from Intel and wait, then from AMD and wait... it's probably not worth the seesaw of waiting.

I agree, $130 seems reasonable, and there are several at that price.

The argument is that if you have an overclockable Z370 motherboard, you should be using a K processor and overclock.

For your purposes, I imagine that a I5-8400 is the right fit.
Plus, a Z270 motherboard preserves your option to upgrade to a stronger K processor in the future.

Let's say I buy a motherboard that is not meant to be used for OC.
How much is it? Unless it's less than $60 or half of how much Z370 costs, I don't think it's worth waiting several months as I make more than $60 per hour.

I doubt it will go much lower than $100, maybe $80 at the lowest. $130 for a Z370 board is quite a good price.

I actually got i5-2500K with a nice motherboard for OC when they came out but never overclocked, haha. Maybe that's why I am not so sensitive about it.

Do you think pinnacle ridge coming out in 4 months can be better than 8400 in terms of performance, price, temperature, and power? I think 8400 is currently better in all 4 categories when compared to Zen1 CPUs.

I don't think you can go wrong with either Ryzen or Coffee Lake. If you go Ryzen maybe you lose a tad in gaming when you get your 1070, but save a little money and have some better future upgrade options. Who knows though....maybe with the competition getting intense...Intel will keep the socket and give you the option to upgrade to a 9600k or something in the future.
