Hey guys,

i just bought a 960evo from a friend. he installed his windows on it and about 2 weeks later decided to sell his first pc and go back to mac.

anyway, i wanna install my OS on it because currently im using a 2-3 year old 1tb hdd and it's getting a bit sluggish.

i installed the windows 10 installer on usb drive and booted in the UEFI mode of said pen drive, with the only other storage device being my 960evo.

it came up in the windows 8 modes and i proceeded without a product key because i was expecting it to just have me sign into my windows account eventually.

ive tried booting from uefi usb, legacy bios usb, boot manager on 960evo, and just the regulat 960evo. one time, when i went thru boot manager on the 960evo it looked windows 10 was happening (blue screen with a voice that talked me thru the process) but it ended up failing... all the other times i went thru usb the interface was purple like windows 8 and it wouldn't let me select the ssd as the partition to install on.

i should also mention i have two product keys, one oem from when my computer was on windows 8.1 and a different one from when after I upgraded to windows 10.

when i downloaded the media installer it asked if i wanted to install windows 7, 8.1, or 10.

when i opt to enter a keycode instead of "continue without product key" it gives me two different messages depending on which key i use. for the original key it says unable to install, please check your usb drive. when i use the windows 10 key it just says do not recognize product key.

when i remounted and booted frkm my hdd with my copy of windows 10 on it ran fine. just like it used to.

i did a major hardware update (new mobo cpu and ram). i thought this would be easier. tried to provide as much info as i can but i was at it for over two hours and tried some other random stuff too so any questions or suggestions are appreciated

Solution
Too many moving parts at once.

New hardware ("mobo cpu and ram"), and a new drive that needs to be cleaned, with a Win 10 that was an Upgrade.

You need to get the Win 10 on the current drive fully functional and activated with the new hardware.
This is an issue, because you should have done this before changing any parts:

its been like a year since the win 10 got out but i dont relly recommond it.
the admin told me that the os u use doesnt affect the performance of the rig...so so so i think u should go with the 7 or 8.1 alone not package.
im not telling u not to install the latest version of something bc if it wasnt good why would they make it if it was bad.

Hang on, you dropped the hardware update in there at the last paragraph, what's happened with that? how does that fit in? looks like you are trying to do a clean install, so a hardware refresh shouldn't matter.

Where did you get the win10 installer from, how did you install it on the flash drive?

I'm not sure if he's just saying that he's done a full upgrade in the past and it was easier than this is turning out to be. Difficult to understand, it could be a throw away comment?

So, Franklin....give us the short version of what you have and are trying to do.

System with Win 10, fully activated? Yes/No.
A new 960 EVO?
And you want a clean install on the 960?

Should be no problem.
Do the install, when it asks for the license key, select Skip.
You currently activated Win 10 'digital entitlement' is stored at the mothership.
If all you are doing is changing the drive, it will activate itself once it goes online after the install.
