im purchasing my cpu from a friend of a friend and this is what he says happened:

"I tried to install it in a z170 board, which it should have worked in guaranteed
But I forgot to do the bios update
As such, I think I broke something on the board, and it just WON'T update bios
Trust me, I tried
So yeah, that's literally all I did with it
Took the CPU right out and tried to update bios on the board to no avail."

so did he do any damage to the cpu ? or did he destroy his mobo messing with bios ?

any opinion is welcomed at this point im actually willing to take the risk considering hes selling it cheap and buying the 8th gen model.

Solution
Assuming he did not put the CPU wrong way into socket, and the motherboard was operational, there should be absolutely no damage to the CPU. However, if for some reason the board was shorted during his try, he could damage the CPU along the motherboard. There's no way of telling what happened just by his description.
Also, he could not broke anything on his board just by placing CPU and starting it, again, UNLESS he put the CPU wrong way. Once he put into his board any CPU that is supported by board's current BIOS version, he should be able to boot it and update BIOS. Depending on the board, he might even be able to do that without CPU at all. If however he tried to update BIOS without CPU on motherboard that does not support such...
