I have an alienware m17x r4 from 2012 I will be doing the gtx 970 or 980m upgrade too. I was told my i7 3630qm should be good for gaming if I do the GPU upgrade. My question is, if say a games min requirements are a CPU with 3.0 GHz. Will I have performance issues or will my CPU get the job done?

I'm okay with the cost, the PC is still a very capable rig minus the GPU and CPU. It has 16g RAM, windows 10 64, and an 800g hard drive. It would literally be a new PC if I did this, and it's still a better cost than a new gaming PC, even if it costs up to $1,000. I may just end up getting a new desktop, but I'm looking into this option first. I heard on another forum that an i7 3610 is really all you need for gaming, as long as you have a good GPU. I have a hard time believing that with most games coming out requiring at least 3 GHz. I guess after a little more research what I'm getting at is that I'm worried about bottlenecking the CPU.

I could maybe build the tower with decent parts for around 1,000 to 1,200. More if you want lastest cpu and gpu ect. Once you start adding in a decent monitor and everything you're probably looking closer to 2,000 bucks or more for something that won't be outdated in the next couple years. I will probably end up going that route I spose anyway. It looks like it would be around 950 to put the best CPU and GPU the m 17x will handle in, and they aren't that great by today's standards. I was just looking at my options hoping to get a few more years out of it, it's been a great rig for a laptop.
